How do I get legally married in BC, Canada?
If you’re wondering how to get legally wed in BC, it’s actually pretty simple.
Whether you’re planning a big wedding with all your people or a quiet just-us elopement in the mountains, the legal side of getting married in British Columbia is actually really simple.
As a wedding photographer, I’ve seen it all—and trust me, this part doesn’t need to be complicated.
Here’s exactly what you need to do:
Step 1: Get Your Marriage Licence
Before anything else, you need a marriage licence.
You can find out where to get one near you, here.
What you need:
Government ID
Basic info about both of you
About $100
There’s no waiting period, so you can technically get married the same day.
Step 2: Hire an Officiant
To make it legal, you need:
A marriage commissioner, or
A licensed religious officiant
You can’t have a friend legally marry you in BC, but they can still be part of the ceremony if you want.
Step 3: Have Your Ceremony
This can look however you want.
You just need:
You two
Your officiant
Two witnesses (19+)
That’s it.
So whether you’re:
Walking down the aisle in front of 100 guests, or
Saying your vows in a quiet forest somewhere
…it’s equally valid and legal.
Step 4: Sign the Licence
Right after the ceremony, everyone signs:
You
Your partner
Your two witnesses
Your officiant
Step 5: That’s It—You’re Married
Your officiant sends in the paperwork, and your official marriage certificate arrives in the mail a few weeks later.
From a Photographer’s Perspective
The legal side of your wedding is quick and easy—whether you’re having a big celebration or a low-key elopement.
The part you’ll actually remember?
The way it felt.
So don’t stress the paperwork. Keep it simple, and make the rest of the day yours.
